Applying for legal aid

At MTM, we believe that justice must always be available to all. That’s why MTM Defence Lawyers is the largest provider of legal aid in Central and among Scotland’s top firms for legal aid. We welcome clients who are in receipt of, or eligible for, legal aid and we have long experience of securing legal aid on behalf of our clients.

What you need to do

Many people simply do not realise that they may be eligible for legal aid even if they are working. Legal aid applications do, however, come with some strict requirements and time is of the essence. If you are applying for legal aid, the following are required in every new case:

• Your most recent wage slip (if you are working)
• Your letter from the Job Centre Plus or Benefits Agency confirming your benefits if you are unemployed
• A bank statement or cash machine print out showing your wages or benefits – IN ALL CASES

This documentation needs to be supplied to MTM within 7 days of signing any legal aid application.

What if I don’t qualify?

In the event that you are not eligible for legal aid, or in the event that a legal aid application is not appropriate, we will be open and upfront about your options. We believe in being totally transparent: this is why we have so many private clients as well as legal aid clients.

We can work on a fixed fee basis or on hourly rates, and we can find a pay structure to suit your circumstances. Being flexible is always a client priority for us – it’s as important as getting the right result for you.
